Technical Audit: Metadata

To view metadata, dig into the source code of the website. You can do this in a number of ways depending on which browser and computer you are using. We recommend using the Chrome browser.

View Source Code

  • In the URL bar, enter view-source: web page address you want to analyze into the URL.
  • For example: view-source:creamnation.com

Keyboard Short Cut Alternative

  • On the web page you are auditing, right-click on your mouse anywhere on the page, then select View Page Source from the dropdown.

Search Source Code

  1. Next, search the source code itself by using the Find shortcut. On a Mac use Command+F, or on a PC use CTRL+F and type into the Find bar what you are searching. (Example: to analyze the meta description, type "description").
  2. Locate the metadata tag you seek within the code.
